Grief and consolation in new music

What contribution does music composed after 1945 make in dealing with death, what form of mourning can it accompany, what kind of consolation does it offer? Our author Uli Aumüller discussed these questions - on a very personal occasion - with the composer Wolfgang Rihm, who lives in Karlsruhe, and received a surprising answer - which can be applied not only to the music of Wolfgang Rihm, but also to compositions by Helmut Lachenmann, for example.
