Philosophie und Neue Musik – Der Gehalt des Konzertsaals (in German only)

The myth told by the concert hall is that there could be such a thing as a music in itself, that is, actually a myth-free, an a-ritual music, abstracted from all ritual and social ties back, which in the concert hall occur only as a quotation, if at all. But this abstraction is itself a myth, a myth that the concert hall conceals by displaying it with every concert. And this idea of music in itself, which is celebrated in the concert hall, simultaneously conceals its own tradition, the history of the concert hall, an eminently European history that resonates in every concert, regardless of the music. Thus its provinciality, on the one hand, from the courtly dance or banquet hall, i.e. the idea of the sublimated dance, of hearing ES dance without dancing - and the tradition of the exhibition of the sacrificing body - i.e. the basic idea of Judeo-Christian sacred music, which is also the basis for the construct of the "sounding body."
