Michael Kopfermann and the Munich Phren Ensemble

My little portrait of Dr. Michael Kopfermann and his Munich Phrenensemble was the first radio programme I produced for Bayerischer Rundfunk. Probably the music editors were quite happy that someone volunteered to do a portrait of the Munich composer, who was considered to be very bizarre and idiosyncratic. After all, Bayerischer Rundfunk was obliged to report not only on the internationally recognised, but also on the local greats.
I had the idea of portraying Michael Kopfermann because I had played in his ensemble for a good year, both in the music ensemble and in Carmen Nagel-Berninger's theatre group. I spent my musical apprenticeship years with the Phren Ensemble and, as my colleague Gösta Courkamp later found out in his master's thesis, I was in quite illustrious company, because before me such illustrious personalities as Hannay Schygulla, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Franz Xaver Kroetz, Alexej Sagerer and also Helmut Lachenmann had made their first steps with the Phren Ensemble and Berninger's experimental music theatre.
