Patricia Kopatchinskaja plays Tschaikowsky

Violin concerto in D-minor op. 35 with Vladimir Fedoseyev

Patricia Kopatchinskaja’s performances bring about standing ovations. She is adored by the public, but the praise of professionals is sometimes less rewarding. She was recently described with affection as: „The wild boar among the classical violinists.“ Anyone thinking there would be no surprise left after the idiosyncrasies of punk violinist Nigel Kennedy, then this young musician proves them wrong... “an ingenuous (eager) child with an angel face, besotted with music and hungry for adventures ... a phenomenal soloist ... the most exciting violinist of her generation“ ... are some of the superlatives used to describe Patricia Kopatchinskaja by the enthusiastic press. Moldavia was her place of birth but this barefooted miracle violinist also felt at home on concert stages all over the world. Her parents were both musicians and she studied composition and the violin in Vienna and Bern. In 2000 she won the international Henryk Szeryng competition, the first of a long series of international prizes followed, including the 2009 Echo Klassik for the recital cd „naive“ with Fazil Say and in 2010 she won the BBC Music Magazine Award for her CD of the complete works for violin and orchestra by Beethoven. As soloist she played with many famous orchestras (a.o. Wiener Philharmoniker, Wiener Symphoniker, Mozarteum-Orchester Salzburg, Philharmonia Orchestra London, Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin, Staatskapelle Berlin, SWR-Radiosymphonieorchester Stuttgart, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and many more) and worked with many world renowned conductors. Vladimir Ashkenazy, Philippe Herreweghe, Philippe Jordan, Roger Norrington, Paavo Järvi, Kyrill Petrenko, Russell Davies… to name but a few. She performed in most of the great concert halls all over the world: Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Berliner and Kölner Philharmonie, Gasteig in Munich, Tonhalle Zurich, KKL Luzern, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall and the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Moscow conservatory of music, Sidney Opera House and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The film shows Patricia Kopatchinskaja during the rehearsal and performance of Tschaikovsky’s violin concerto with the Tschaikovsky Simphony Orchestra Moscow, directed by Vladimir Fedoseyev. In some of her interviews one finds out more about her approach to this standard work in classical music.
