Adding the "Kunst der Fuge" to the repertoire on the occasion of their 25th anniversary was not because it was a beautiful piece of music by Johann Sebastian Bach and a crown on his life's work. For Stephan Mai, the first violinist of the ensemble, this piece was a "democracy made in heaven" in which everone can think or say what he wants, loudly or softly and without ever disturbing anyone. Everyone at any time is needed. Even during the pauses one is needed." The Akademie für Alte Musik performs their own interpretation of Bach's work, distributing the 18 counterpoints on different instrumental groups in the room. During the recording in the 'Berliner Radialsystem' on 28th November 2007, director Uli Aumüller was allowed to film the ensemble at very close range and created a very intimate portrait. For 90 minutes you can actually see with how much ease and concentration the members of this Berlin top orchestra listen to each other and transform the magnum opus by Johann Sebastian Bach into a vibrant piece of music.
Music couldn't be more beautiful than that!
